Designing Honey Labels with AI

1. Send your chosen AI tool a very specific instruction; provide detailed information, such as label size and style. Make notes on the following points:
- Determine the dimensions of the label: you’ll need the exact size of the label in inches. If you plan to use AI-generated content for your label, we recommend our “Free Freddie” design series because it gives you maximum creative freedom. Then, select the label that matches your jar size. On the product page, scroll down to the “Personalize” button. Underneath you'll find the print specification sheet. This document contains the exact dimensions of the label.
Example: For “Free Freddie – Rectangular Label 16 oz Round Jar” the final label size is 4.3" × 2.1" (W × H).
- Tell the story of your beekeeping business and your honey: describe your honey and include details such as the product name (in this case, “honey”), the honey variety (for example, lavender honey, wildflower honey, or acacia honey), and any special characteristics. You can also explain where your honey is sold (such as retail stores, a farm shop, farmers markets, holiday markets, or online). Feel free to add what makes your beekeeping business unique. The more specific the product context you give your AI tool is, the better it can bring your vision to life.
Example: Lavender honey from a family-owned beekeeping business, sold through retail stores.
- Describe the character of your beekeeping business and your honey: Is it minimalistic or bold, elegant or rustic, luxurious or simple, calm or energetic, modern or traditional? Choose three to six characteristics and write them down. This will help the AI understand the design style you're looking for.
Example: Minimalistic, elegant, luxurious, premium, calm, and modern.
- Choose three to five colors: decide which colors best represent your honey and which ones should stand out clearly on the label. Also make a note of any colors you definitely do not want to use.
Example: Golden yellow, cream, dark green, and warm brown. Avoid neon colors and bright pink.
- Describe the layout and visual elements: what elements (flowers, bees, symbols, and so on) would you like to see on your honey label? What style should these elements have (illustrated, painted, realistic, etc.)? Also make a note of anything you definitely do not want included on your label. The more clearly you describe your preferences, the better the AI can create a design that matches your vision.
Example: plenty of blank space for text to be added later, subtle lavender illustrations or delicate botanical elements, soft gradients, and a light watercolor or soft-touch look. Clean, balanced composition with no cluttered design elements, no rustic styling, no cartoon elements, and no bee illustrations.
Generating Honey Labels with AI: With or Without Text?
When you use AI to create designs for your honey labels, the generated concepts often include not only graphics but also text. Would you prefer an AI-generated design with text or without it? In general, there are two options:
- With text: you can use AI to generate a complete honey label design that includes both graphics and text. Then, select “Free Freddie” and upload the finished image file into our design tool. This allows you to order your honey labels without making any additional edits in the design tool.
- Our recommendation – without text: alternatively, you can use an AI tool to create a design that contains graphics only, without any text. Later, upload the image file to “Free Freddie” and use it as the background for your honey label. Then add your text using our design tool. You can save your design and continue editing it until you're completely satisfied with the result.
Let's take a look at the pros and cons of both options:
- Flexibility & Control: if you add text with AI from the start, you'll need to go back to your AI tool every time you want to make a change. This can be limiting, especially with free plans, which often restrict the number of image generations you can create (for example, five images per day). With our design tool, you can save your designs and come back to edit them later. You can update your text anytime, as often as you like, at no extra cost.
- Text placement & Fine-tuning: our design tool gives you precise control over text placement with just a few clicks. AI places text based on the instructions in your prompt, which can sometimes lead to less accurate results.

Create a background design for a honey label. Important: Generate a background design only. Do not include any text, logos, numbers, placeholders, lettering, or typography of any kind.
- Label dimensions: my label measures 4.3" × 2.1" (W × H).
- Product context: my lavender honey comes from a family-owned beekeeping business and is sold through retail stores.
- Design style: minimalistic, elegant, luxurious, premium, calm, and modern.
- Colors: soft lavender, white, and gray. No bold colors. Optional subtle gray accents, but no dominant gold tones.
- Layout and visual elements: plenty of blank space for text to be added later, subtle lavender illustrations or delicate botanical elements, soft gradients, and a light watercolor or soft-touch look. Clean, balanced composition with no cluttered design elements, no rustic styling, no cartoon elements, and no bee illustrations.
- Create a mockup: create a realistic, high-quality mockup showing the design without text on a 16 oz round honey jar.
- Create the image file: once I approve the mockup, prepare the design as a print-ready JPG file with a minimum resolution of 200 dpi and dimensions of 4.3" × 2.1" (W × H).

2. In the next step, ask your chosen AI tool to create the final design file for download. Once the design is complete, download the file from the AI tool. Make sure you end up with a JPG file (PNG and PDF files are also acceptable) with a minimum resolution of 200 dpi. It's also important to verify that the design matches the exact dimensions you specified. You can usually check the file format, dimensions, and resolution by right-clicking the file and selecting Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac).
3. Select the correct version from the “Free Freddie” design series and click “Personalize”
Good to know: all of our design templates can be customized individually. If you're looking for maximum creative freedom, we recommend our “Free Freddie” design series. These templates are blank, allowing you to freely add elements, photos, and text.
4. You are now in our online editor. At the top, you'll see a row containing all the elements currently included in your design. Use the plus (+) icon in the same row to add additional elements. Now add your AI file to the design as an image.
Good to know: The blue line indicates the 2 mm safety margin from the edge. The pink line represents the die-cut line, which marks the outer edge of the label. All important elements should remain within the blue lines to ensure they are not cut off. Any elements extending beyond the pink line will definitely be trimmed.
5. Now add your text using the plus (+) icon. Most design templates already include predefined text fields to help ensure you don’t forget important information, such as the product name. Free Freddie does not contain any text fields. Here is the essential information that should appear on your honey label:
- Best before date
- Address
- Product name
- Country of origin
- Net weight
- Storage instructions
Move the text elements into the correct positions, choose your preferred fonts, and adjust the font sizes as needed. Using the three dots in the lower-right corner, you can save your design to edit or review it later.
Please note that honey legal requirements specify exactly which information must appear on your honey label. Once everything is complete, proceed to finalize your order.
Can AI-Generated Content Be Used Freely?
We want to help you stay on the safe side, so here are a few guidelines for using AI to create designs for your honey labels.
What you put into an AI tool, and the content generated from it, can usually be used freely: however, different AI tools have their own terms of use, so you should check each tool’s policies to determine who ultimately owns the generated content.
AI-generated content is created based on existing data: this means your results may resemble designs that already exist. Such similarities can potentially lead to legal issues. We recommend reviewing and modifying your AI-generated design:
- How can I review my AI-generated design? It's simple: use free online tools such as Google Lens or TinEye to identify and avoid possible similarities with other images.
- How can I modify my AI-generated design? As a next step, make your design more unique by adding text or additional graphics using our online editor.
You should also avoid intentionally imitating protected designs: please do not use your AI tool to recreate well-known brands, characters, or designs. Doing so may also lead to legal issues.
Ultimately, you are responsible: Please use AI responsibly and do not share personal or confidential information with AI tools. The content you create and use with AI is your responsibility, especially if you use it for commercial purposes.
